Data from the recent DEFRA UK Food Security Report

Here’s some data from the recent DEFRA UK Food Security Report:

Overall we grow 60% of what we eat. 40% is imported.

Worst for self-sufficiency are vegetables 55% and fruit 17%.

Global use of maize and vegetable oil for biofuel production continues to rise and are now at 16% and 17% respectively.

Our Utilizable Agricultural Acreage has fallen by 7% between 1984 to 2023, 1.75% per decade.

Fertiliser prices remain significantly higher (over 60%) than levels before 2020

UK industrial electricity prices remain high in comparison to the rest of the world.

Total business investment in the sector is down to 800 million/quarter from 1.3 billion/quarter in 2019.

According to the report the biggest threats to food security are from bird flu, climate change (used to be called global warming!) and biodiversity loss……….no mention of mass immigration, the lack of funding for core food production, net zero or the idolising promotion of re-wilding schemes.

But don’t worry, the report says:

‘Imports from diverse sources make a positive contribution to UK food security’
